Driver Side vs. Passenger Side vs. Left vs. Right
This one causes real ordering mistakes. The trap isn’t that “left” and “driver side” are different things — it’s that “left” depends on where you’re standing, and GM’s labels don’t.
Why it’s confusing
When you walk up to the front of a car and look at it, the side on your left is the car’sright, and vice-versa. So “the left headlight” means one thing to you standing in front of the car and the opposite to the person sitting in it. That ambiguity is exactly where wrong parts get ordered.
GM’s convention (the rule that fixes it)
GM — like the rest of the industry — names sides as if you are sitting in the driver’s seat, facing forward. Orient yourself that way and it’s unambiguous:
- Driver side
- = the left side of the vehicle (in U.S. left-hand-drive vehicles).
- Passenger side
- = the right side of the vehicle.
- “Left” / “LH” in a GM listing
- = driver side.
- “Right” / “RH” in a GM listing
- = passenger side.
So the fix is a habit: always picture yourself in the driver’s seat, looking out the windshield. Your left hand is the driver side; your right hand is the passenger side. That’s the frame GM’s part labels use. (Note: this assumes a U.S. left-hand-drive vehicle, which is how GM labels the North American parts we cover.)
Why it matters for parts
Left- and right-side parts are usually mirror images — a driver-side door harness, mirror, or trim panel will not fit the passenger side. Getting the side right the first time saves a return.
